DIY Electrical in Bali: What's Safe and What Isn't

In this article I'll be direct about what you can reasonably do yourself versus what you shouldn't touch — based on the actual risk, not just a blanket "hire a professional for everything."

Safe to Do Yourself

  • Resetting a tripped MCB — just flip it back. If it trips again immediately, stop and call someone.
  • Replacing a plug — on an appliance, not on a wall socket. Straightforward if you follow the L/N/E connections.
  • Replacing a light bulb — turn off the switch first, wait for the bulb to cool.
  • Testing outlets — a cheap outlet tester from Ace Hardware shows you if live/neutral are swapped or if earth is missing.

Possible If You Know What You're Doing

  • Replacing a wall outlet or switch — turn off the MCB for that circuit, verify it's dead with a tester, take a photo before disconnecting, connect the new one the same way. The risk is working on a circuit you thought was off but isn't — always test.
  • Replacing a ceiling light fitting — same precautions. The risk goes up if the ceiling is high or the wiring is old and brittle.

Don't Do This Yourself

  • Anything inside the MCB panel — the incoming supply from PLN is always live, even with all MCBs off. Touching the wrong thing kills you.
  • Running new cable in walls — it's not just about connecting wires. Cable sizing, conduit, junction box placement and circuit protection all need to be correct.
  • Installing new circuits — same as above, plus you're connecting to the panel.
  • Anything involving earthing — if you get it wrong, you won't know until someone gets shocked.
  • Water heater wiring — combines high current with a wet environment. Not worth it.

Bali-Specific Risk: Non-Standard Wiring

Many Bali villas were built or extended informally. This means: wires that aren't the colour they should be, circuits that share neutrals unexpectedly, live wires in places you wouldn't expect. Before doing any DIY electrical work in a Bali villa, spend IDR 350,000 on a diagnostic visit — it's worth knowing what you're dealing with.
