Electrician Services in Bali: An Area-by-Area Guide

Bali is not one electrical market โ€” it is a dozen of them. The wiring problems we get called out for in Canggu look nothing like the ones in Ubud, and a clifftop villa on the Bukit presents challenges that simply don't exist down in flat, dense Kuta. After years of running call-outs across the island, we've learned that the fastest way to diagnose a property is to know where it is before we even open the panel. The age of the building, the local supply quality, the distance from the PLN transformer, the proximity to salt air โ€” all of it shifts by district, and all of it shapes what a licensed electrician needs to look for.

This guide walks through the main areas we serve and the electrical realities of each one. Whether you own a villa, manage a rental portfolio, or run a cafรฉ or restaurant, knowing the typical faults for your area helps you ask the right questions and avoid the cowboy "fixes" that lead to callbacks โ€” or fires. If your district isn't listed by name, the patterns almost certainly still apply; Bali's underlying problems repeat themselves with local variations.

Canggu: New-Build Villas, EV Chargers and Rental Upgrades

Canggu is the fastest-growing part of the island, and most of our work here is on relatively new villas โ€” which surprises people who assume new means trouble-free. The problem in Canggu is speed. Villas go up fast, often to a tight budget, and the electrical first-fix is frequently the corner that gets cut: undersized main cable, a consumer unit with no spare ways, and an "earth" that was never properly driven into the ground.

Two trends drive most of our Canggu call-outs. The first is EV chargers โ€” owners install a 7kW wall charger on a circuit that was never designed to carry a continuous heavy load, and the cable or MCB starts overheating. The second is rental upgrades: a villa originally built for a family is converted to a high-occupancy rental, three more AC units go in, and the existing supply and board can no longer cope. Both need a proper load assessment and usually a panel upgrade rather than a patch. See our dedicated Canggu electrician page for more.

Seminyak: Commercial Fit-Outs and Overloaded Circuits

Seminyak is dense and commercial. Alongside villas we do a lot of fit-out and repair work for restaurants, bars, boutiques and salons โ€” and the recurring theme here is overload. A kitchen adds a second fridge, a pizza oven and an extra AC, all on circuits sized for a far lighter load, and the breakers start tripping during peak service. For a restaurant, a tripping circuit at 8pm on a Saturday is lost revenue, so the temptation is to fit a bigger MCB and carry on. That is exactly the move that turns an overload into an overheating cable.

Commercial fit-outs in Seminyak also need proper segregation โ€” kitchen, lighting, AC and signage on separate, correctly-sized circuits with their own protection. We frequently rewire and reorganise consumer units here so the load is distributed sensibly and a single fault doesn't black out the whole venue. The Seminyak electrician page covers our commercial work in more detail.

The Bukit โ€” Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua: Clifftop Villas and Voltage Drop

The Bukit peninsula in Bali's south is its own world electrically. The villas here are often large, luxurious, and a long way from the nearest PLN transformer โ€” and that distance is the root of the most common problem on the peninsula: voltage drop. Run a heavy load down a few hundred metres of undersized cable and the voltage sags at the far end, which makes pumps struggle, AC compressors run hot, and sensitive electronics fail early.

In Uluwatu especially, clifftop villas have long cable runs from the road down to the building, and getting the cable size right for that distance is critical โ€” under-spec it and you'll be chasing voltage problems forever. We also do a lot of generator and solar tie-in work across the Bukit, because owners want backup for the area's less reliable supply; proper changeover switching is essential so the generator and PLN can never back-feed each other. Jimbaran and Nusa Dua share the same long-run, voltage-drop and backup-power profile. If you're on the peninsula, a proper installation sized for the distance is the single best investment you can make.

Kuta and Legian: Older Hotels and Faulty Wiring

Kuta and Legian are among the oldest developed parts of Bali, and the building stock shows it. Much of our work here is repair rather than new installation โ€” older hotels, guesthouses and shophouses with wiring that has been added to, patched and re-patched across decades. Multiple generations of electricians, each working around the last, leave consumer units that nobody fully understands and junction boxes stuffed with connections.

The faults here are classic ageing-installation problems: loose terminations that arc and overheat, brittle insulation that cracks, circuits with no earth, and undersized cable feeding loads it was never meant to carry. In a busy hotel, an intermittent fault is hard to chase without proper test gear, so we lean on insulation testers rather than guesswork. If your Kuta or Legian property keeps throwing the same fault, the long-term fix is usually a targeted rewire of the worst circuits โ€” see our repair and fault-finding service.

Ubud: Jungle Properties, Unstable Supply and Surge Protection

Ubud and the surrounding villages sit inland, often at the end of long supply lines through the jungle, and the electrical signature of the area reflects that. The supply here is noticeably less stable than on the coast โ€” voltage fluctuates, brownouts are common, and lightning during the wet season sends surges down the line that destroy electronics, AC boards and pump controllers.

Because of this, surge protection and voltage stabilisation matter far more in Ubud than almost anywhere else on the island. We routinely fit whole-property surge protection devices at the consumer unit and recommend stabilisers for sensitive equipment. Jungle properties also bring rodent and insect damage to cabling in roof voids and outbuildings, which shows up as maddening intermittent faults. The Ubud electrician page goes deeper on protecting an inland property. For the underlying symptoms, our guide on common electrical problems in Bali villas is a useful companion read.

How to Choose a Licensed Electrician for Your Area

Across every district, the question owners really want answered is the same: who do I trust with this? The honest answer is that location-aware diagnosis beats a cheap quote every time. An electrician who knows that Canggu means rental overload, the Bukit means voltage drop, Kuta means ageing faults and Ubud means surge risk will find the real problem faster and fix it once. A technician who treats every job the same โ€” fit a bigger breaker, swap the outlet, reset and hope โ€” will be back, and so will the fault.

Look for someone who tests rather than guesses, who sizes cable and protection for your specific situation, and who will explain what they found. That is the difference between a repair and a recurring callback, wherever in Bali you are.
